For Hugh Jones, the rugged environment of Washington, DC had a way of making a young athlete understand the complexities of life. “It was difficult staying away from the bad stuff — but those same people kept me away from that life,” he said, describing how those in his community who were caught up in the street hustle also encouraged him to pursue basketball.
