A global initiative, Nike’s 2013 We Run Race series is well under way and looks to serve as a big hit this year as thousands of runners worldwide take to the streets in an effort to beat personal and competitive challenges.

Nike’s We Run series races into its fifth year by celebrating, motivating and inspiring athletes around the world with events in 26 cities this fall. More than 350,000 anticipated runners will cover over 3 million kilometers during the course of the series.

Nike’s We Run races range in distance from 5K to a full marathon and reflect the distinctive enthusiasms of the host city. From Sao Paulo to Seoul to Singapore, runners will be moved to action through a series of unique experiences. Each We Run race brings together athletes, top local performers and personalities, and uses an interactive course to give runners the chance to participate in their city and their run in a new and innovative way.

The We Run race in South Africa, held Oct. 12, offered runners a new twist. The field of 10,000 runners faced a challenging split-course for the night-time race, hosted in the heart of Johannesburg’s central business district. Runners chose to ‘Move Uptown’ or ‘Move Downtown’ and wore distinctive race day tees, signifying which course they selected.

Each route provided runners with an equally challenging course and visually impressive experience. Move Downtown runners enjoyed the electric vibe of Jozi’s inner-city streets, passing a number of iconic Jozi landmarks on route including Johannesburg City Hall, The Gauteng Legislature, Joubert Park and Market Street, to name a few. While the Move Uptown runners, were treated to panoramic views of the glowing city skyline as they ascended the M1 highway. The two groups merged halfway into the race, and all runners celebrated at the race village just after the finish line at Mary Fitzgerald Square.

Runners throughout Johannesburg ignited the #movejozi movement from August by connecting and encouraging each other via the Nike+ digital challenge, to run more, and collectively reach 375,000 kilometers.

The We Run journey continues in Tel Aviv, Oct 29th. Follow along in the journey by clicking on the above “Find Your We Run City” button.
