Today Nike Basketball takes a look back at the Nike Air Hyperflight as a part of the brand’s “Twenty Designs That Changed The Game” series.
โSo if Bill Bowerman was designing a basketball shoe, what would he do?โ-ย Eric Avarย
The Nike Air Hyperflight might look defiantly futuristic, but itโs actually rooted in Nike co-founder Bill Bowermanโs tireless quest for less. The Hyperflightโs lead designer, Eric Avar, recalls the start of the project.ย โBill Bowerman had just passed away, it was a powerful time. Bill was a spiritual icon: a teacher, coachย โย andwhat he means to Nike is indescribable.โ
On the indoor basketball court on Nikeโs campus, Avar happened to stumble into a rehearsal screening of a video celebrating Billโs life.ย โIt was the day before the memorial and I wasnโt meant to be there watching it,โย recalled Avar.ย โI was one of the only people in there and was totally lost in the moment.โ
It was then that the question of how Bill would design a basketball shoe struck Avar. Heโd met with Bowerman a few times over the years. โAnything I showed him heโd ask, โCan you make it lighter?โ He definitely instilled that obsession into Nike design culture and reinforced it in me.โ
The answer toย โWhat would he do?โย became obvious. Avar stripped everything down and created a track spike silhouette for the court. The Nike Air Hyperflightโs traditional approach to creating the unconventional was a fitting tribute to a legend.
The Nike Air Hyperflightโs colors would also redefine the presentation of the basketball shoe forever, paving the way for an impending colorway assault.

very cool shoe..can not believe these have not been retro’d yet! like these the zoom turbine and 2k3 flight! all three were great shoes!
I love these shoes. I remember Jason Gardner wore these his senior year for Arizona. I wish I would have gotten a pair. I’m with you bdogg about these being retro’d.
I would agree with both of y’all. I was just wondering the other day why they keep skipping this shoe on the retro list…
