Kevin Durant wanted to be a meteorologist when he grew up, which sounds like the kind of random childhood dream that gets abandoned once you realize you’re going to be a 7-foot basketball prodigy instead. Nike didn’t forget about it, though, and in 2013, they turned Durant’s weather obsession into one of the most unique signature colorways of that era with the KD 6 “Meteorology.” Now it’s coming back in Fall 2026, after 13 years, bringing those weather radar graphics and color gradients that actually mean something, instead of just being random patterns slapped on a shoe.

Kevin Durant wanted to be a meteorologist as a child, fascinated by weather patterns and storm prediction. This wasn’t marketing fiction. Durant discussed this ambition in interviews. Nike’s designers discovered this interest and translated weather radar imagery into footwear design, borrowing the color gradients meteorologists use to show precipitation intensity. The โ€œweathermanโ€ theme was introduced on the KD 4, but over the years, different silhouettes borrowed the theme.

The Nike KD 6 โ€œMeteorology” was released in 2013 during Durant’s peak with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Highlighted with a weather map print that mimics Doppler radar displays. Black represents clear skies, atomic red shows intense storm activity, and medium olive and noble red fill intermediate zones. The graphics flow across the upper in patterns resembling weather systems moving across radar screens, creating a dynamic appearance. The print integrates with the KD 6’s contours rather than looking like applied decoration.

As for the technology, the KD 6 features Flywire, which provides support through lightweight cables in the lacing system, creating dynamic lockdown without the need for heavy materials. Full-length Zoom Air cushioning runs heel to toe, using tightly stretched fibers in pressurized air chambers for responsive cushioning.

Bottom Line

While I am not a huge fan of the KD 6, I am glad to see Nike skip the KD 5. Furthermore, the KD 6 does have some really nice colorways. From the look, I can appreciate the pair. However, it wasn’t that comfortable to me and pinched my toe. Wearing casually might be a different story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this release in women’s or kids’ sizing?

Nike Basketball retros sometimes release in extended sizing including women’s and grade school sizes, but this varies by model and colorway. However, for the KD 6 “Meteorogoly,” the pair is not expected to launch in women’s sizes.

How does the KD 6 fit compared to current basketball shoes?

The KD 6 generally fits true to size but has a narrower fit than many modern basketball shoes, particularly in the midfoot where Flywire provides compression. People with wider feet may need to go up half a size.ย
