Nike Celebrates Go Skateboarding Day with Preview of Coleman Oval Park in NYC

As a part of this year’s Go Skateboarding Day festivities, many of Nike SB’s signature athletes partook in a celebration of the revival of Coleman Oval Park on the Lower East Side.

Nike celebrated Go Skateboarding Day around the world from Australia to Germany on Thursday, June 21, 2012.

Nike Skateboarding athletes Paul Rodriguez (P-Rod), Eric Koston, Alex Olson, Stefan Janoski, Brian Anderson, Clark Hassler and Ishod Wair came out to ride and support the New York community in celebration of the unofficial holiday, as well as the revival of the skate park at Coleman Oval Park in the Lower East Side.

The revival of Coleman Oval skate park is made possible through New York City’s Department of Parks & Recreation Adopt a Park program, a grant awarded from Architecture for Humanity and NIKE, Inc. to community partner Steve Rodriguez from 5boro, and generous contributions by California Skateparks, the Paul Rodriguez Skateboarding Foundation and the Tony Hawk Foundation. The park was designed to provide access to skateboarding for all levels with features built into the bridge, skate able park benches, tables and innovative obstacles.

Thousands of kids skated from park to park to end up at Coleman Oval for a unique sneak preview ride, for one day only, before the park opens in a few weeks. Coleman Oval Park represents a place that will continue to provide a home to the local community located in the iconic go-to spot under the Manhattan Bridge , as well as to all of the boroughs in NYC.
