Dirk Nowitzki Joins Nike+ Basketball Berlin 5-on-5

As part of the global Game On World campaign, Nike made a splash in the Berlin basketball community recently with a week-long “Berlin 5 on 5” basketball event. Sixteen teams from the German capital — 14 men’s and two women’s — gathered in a refurbished gym in Berlin’s Neukölln district to compete for some spectacular prizes. The highlight of the event was a surprise visit from Germany’s No. 1 basketball athlete Dirk Nowitzki. The teams were delighted to see Nowitzki as he joined them for some friendly competition.

“The teams have put on some exciting games and have proven their skills with the ball,” Nowitzki said. “The Berlin basketball community is alive and kicking. What I find especially cool is that ballers can use the Nike+ technology to check their performance at the end of the day.”

Throughout the week participants experienced innovative Nike+ Basketball technology. At the heart of this latest innovation is the Nike+ Sport Sensor, a piece of technology built into each shoe that collects information about users’ movement and then wirelessly transmits the data to a Nike+ Basketball app on their phone. The data is then translated into different metrics that deliver real-time feedback and information about their basketball game.

The Nike+ Basketball app breaks down users’ game to deliver information on how high, how hard and how quick they play each game. It also features ‘Showcase’ mode that allows players to record a dunk and superimpose their live data onto the video, which can then be shared with their friends via social media.
