Detachable is giving towards the notion that with the varying weather football games are played in a player may change his cleat length. The looser the turf/earth, the longer the cleat. The more stable the earth, the shorter the cleat.

I second the comment of Choujin23.

The cleats are detachable so that you can change them when they wear down and NOT so that you can take off the cleats and wear the shoes around town.

In fact, the shoes would probably be harder to walk in without cleats….
